Uncertainty surrounds a planned nationwide petrol pump shutdown as petroleum dealers remain divided over an indefinite strike.
The All Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association has announced a nationwide protest. However, the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) has not yet decided whether it will participate.
Dealers Differ Over Strike Plan
The disagreement has created confusion over whether petrol stations across Pakistan will remain open. Meanwhile, different dealer groups continue to hold opposing views on the proposed shutdown.
PPDA Vice President Tariq Hassan said the government had assured dealers that it would address their concerns. Moreover, he said officials requested one week to complete the approval process.
Hassan added that the PPDA’s central committee will decide its next course of action after reviewing the government’s response. Therefore, the association will make a final decision during its meeting in Karachi on Wednesday.
Government Holds Talks With Dealers
Hassan said the Petrol Pump Owners Association announced the strike without consulting the PPDA. Consequently, he clarified that the PPDA is not participating in the protest at this stage.
He also described recent discussions with the government as positive. According to Hassan, officials agreed in principle with the dealers’ demands.
Furthermore, he said the government is seeking the prime minister’s approval on key proposals. These include increasing dealer commissions and restoring the previous fuel pricing mechanism.
The outcome of Wednesday’s meeting is expected to determine whether the country’s largest petroleum dealers’ body joins the nationwide strike.
