ISLAMABAD: Petroleum dealers have refused to sell petrol under the government’s scheme. The government has announced Rs100-per-litre relief for motorists.
Dealers have expressed concerns over its implementation and financial impact.
The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) said dealers received no consultation before the government introduced the mechanism.
Dealers Raise Implementation Concerns
Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, PPDA Vice Chairman Anwar Kamal said dealers had serious reservations about the scheme.
He said the government should provide relief directly to consumers through a simple and transparent mechanism.
Kamal added that inflation had already affected dealers’ working capital, while oil marketing companies still owed them billions of rupees.
Therefore, he said dealers could not accept additional financial responsibility under the relief programme.
“The financial burden on dealers is not workable,” Kamal said, while also demanding higher profit margins for petrol dealers.
He questioned how the government would reimburse dealers for selling petrol at reduced prices.
Kamal said the association had contacted government officials for three consecutive days but had received no response.
Relief Scheme Faces Dealer Opposition
The federal government launched the relief programme on September 13 to ease the impact of rising petrol prices.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government understood the pressure that higher fuel prices had placed on the public.
Under the scheme, motorcycle and rickshaw users can receive Rs100 per litre relief on up to 20 litres each month.
Similarly, owners of vehicles with engines up to 800cc can receive the same relief on up to 30 litres monthly.
However, dealers said they would not participate in the scheme in its current form.
They urged the government to revise the mechanism before implementation and address their concerns through immediate consultations.
