Police have registered a case against the owners, shareholders and construction contractor of a private school in Peshawar after a deadly roof collapse killed children and a teacher.
The incident occurred at Al-Khair Education System in Dir Colony on October 15. According to the FIR, the collapse killed 30 children and a female teacher, while 52 people sustained injuries.
Police registered the case at Agha Mir Jani Shah police station on behalf of the state under Section 322 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The provision concerns deaths caused without an intention to kill.
FIR Alleges Poor Construction and Ignored Warnings
The FIR alleges that the school building used substandard construction materials and had deteriorated to an unsafe condition.
It also states that complaints about damaged walls and roofs had previously reached the school management. However, the management allegedly failed to address the concerns.
According to the report, parts of the building collapsed while classes were underway. Children had reportedly raised concerns about the building’s condition before the incident.
These allegations will require investigation to establish responsibility for the tragedy.
Police Seek Other Suspects
The FIR names the school’s owners, shareholders and construction contractor. It states that the school stood on a 16-marla plot owned by Waheed and Javed. The land was reportedly leased in 2024 before construction began.
Police said they were working to arrest the suspects named in the case. The school owner has also been arrested in connection with the incident.
The investigation will examine the building’s construction, its structural condition and the response to earlier complaints.
Calls for Accountability and Safety Checks
The tragedy has renewed concerns about the safety of school buildings and the enforcement of construction standards. Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have also called for safety reviews of educational institutions following the collapse. A province-wide survey aims to identify hazardous buildings and assess existing safety arrangements.
The investigation will help determine whether negligence or regulatory failures contributed to the deaths. Officials face pressure to establish accountability and prevent similar incidents.
