Pakistan’s media regulator has taken action against Geo News after its coverage of Asha Bhosle’s death. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) issued a show-cause notice for airing Indian content during the broadcast. This development has sparked a wider debate on media freedom and cultural expression in Pakistan.
The issue quickly gained attention across media circles. It also raised concerns about how news channels should report on global artists.
Regulator Cites Legal Violations
Pemra stated that Geo News aired Indian songs and film visuals while reporting the death of Asha Bhosle. Therefore, the regulator considered this a direct violation of existing rules. It referred to the ruling of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which banned Indian content on local TV channels in 2018.
Moreover, Pemra highlighted multiple legal breaches. These include provisions under the Pemra Ordinance 2002 and its 2023 amendment. It also pointed to violations of the Pemra Rules 2009 and the Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015.
As a result, authorities have summoned the CEO of Independent Media Corporation. The channel must submit a written reply within 14 days. In addition, a hearing has been scheduled for April 27.
If the response fails to satisfy the regulator, strict action may follow. For instance, Pemra could impose fines or suspend the licence. In extreme cases, authorities may even revoke the licence.
Geo News Defends Editorial Decision
Meanwhile, Azhar Abbas, Managing Director of Geo News, defended the channel’s actions. He shared his response on X.
He explained that media outlets often revisit an artist’s work after their death. Therefore, he argued that highlighting Asha Bhosle’s songs was justified. He also added that her legacy deserves recognition across borders.
