Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said Pakistan’s economic progress is being supported by joint efforts from the country’s civil and military leadership.
He made the remarks while speaking to media representatives alongside Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam in New York. The meeting took place during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
According to Shehbaz, Pakistan’s leadership is also working collectively to strengthen diplomatic relations and promote peace across the region.
Shehbaz Highlights Joint Efforts to Strengthen Economy
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the country’s leadership was making collective efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s economy and diplomatic ties.
He said, “Allah Almighty was blessing the mutual consultations and efforts of the Pakistani leadership to make the country’s economy strong.”
Furthermore, Shehbaz said Pakistan’s leadership was intensifying efforts to achieve regional peace under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
“We will work together to promote peace in the region,” he added.
The prime minister also described Pakistan and Lebanon as two brotherly countries. He said, “we strongly support territorial integrity of Lebanon and its independence”.
He further said Pakistan continued to condemn atrocities against Lebanon. According to him, killing innocent people was not acceptable.
Lebanon Appreciates Pakistan’s Diplomatic Efforts
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to help calm tensions in the region.
He also welcomed Pakistan’s attempts to find a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict. Additionally, he appreciated the efforts Pakistan had made regarding Lebanon.
Salam said Lebanon could not isolate itself from the wider conflict affecting the region.
He added, “we are hopeful that Pakistani efforts will succeed in bringing down the tensions in the region and hopefully a diplomatic solution will be found”.
Shehbaz Discusses Hormuz and Red Sea Tensions
The prime minister also addressed the situation around the Straits of Hormuz and Bab al Mandab in the Red Sea.
He said brotherly and friendly countries were making efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
Shehbaz also discussed his meeting with the President of Iran. He said he had taken the Iranian President into confidence about Pakistan’s efforts.
According to Shehbaz, he explained during their detailed meeting that establishing peace in the region was an urgent need.
“Iran is our brotherly neighbouring country and like before Pakistan’s civil and military leadership will continue collective efforts for peace,” he remarked.
He said the Iranian President appreciated Pakistan’s efforts. He added that Iran considered the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding fully acceptable.
According to Shehbaz, Iran was also ready to work further on the memorandum. He further remarked that Allah was blessing Pakistan’s efforts for peace.
Shehbaz Says Afghanistan-Based Militants Are Behind Attacks
The prime minister also spoke about terrorism and the security situation in Pakistan.
He said terrorists coming from Afghanistan were carrying out attacks inside Pakistan. According to him, these attacks were killing innocent people and military and police personnel.
“The incidents of terrorism are very condemnable and Pakistan is befittingly responding to this terrorism,” he said adding “We will not sit idle till the complete eradication of terrorism from the country.”
Shehbaz’s remarks covered both Pakistan’s economic situation and its diplomatic efforts across the region.
Meanwhile, his comments also highlighted Pakistan’s stated intention to continue pursuing regional de-escalation alongside its efforts to address terrorism inside the country.
