Pakistan has been selected to chair the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2027. The appointment marks the country’s return to the leadership role for the first time since 1953.
Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema will serve as the incoming chair. The announcement came during the 2026 World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 16.
Pakistan to Lead Global Economic Discussions
The chairmanship will give Pakistan an opportunity to contribute to discussions on international economic and development challenges. It will also allow the country to help facilitate dialogue among member nations.
The Boards of Governors represent the member countries of both institutions. They serve as the highest decision-making bodies and determine the organisations’ broad strategic direction.
Pakistan’s upcoming role comes as countries continue to discuss development financing, economic stability and cooperation through multilateral institutions.
Ahad Cheema Receives Briefing on Responsibilities
Following the announcement, Cheema received a briefing from the World Bank Group’s Corporate Secretariat about the responsibilities of the position.
He also met Aradhana Kumar-Capoor, the World Bank Group’s Vice President and Corporate Secretary. Their discussion focused on institutional support and coordination during Pakistan’s term.
Cheema also met Carlos Carvallo Spalding, the outgoing chair and Governor of Paraguay’s central bank. He congratulated Spalding on completing his tenure and discussed the role’s responsibilities and priorities.
Focus on Developing Countries and Financing
During the meetings, Cheema highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening the voice of developing countries in international financial institutions.
He also emphasised predictable development financing, better coordination among multilateral institutions and greater private-sector investment. These priorities aim to support sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
Pakistan’s chairmanship will provide a platform to engage with member countries on shared economic and development priorities. However, the role does not independently guarantee additional financing or changes to the institutions’ policies.
