Pakistan and Sri Lanka are ready to begin their three-match T20I series on Friday, October 9, at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The opening match will start at 6pm Pakistan time, with Sahibzada Farhan leading Pakistan as the team enters a new phase ahead of the next World Cup cycle.
Sahibzada Farhan Takes Charge
Farhan will captain Pakistan in a home T20I series for the first time. He previously led the national side at the Asian Games, where Pakistan secured a silver medal after losing the final to India.
The 30-year-old opener expressed excitement about the responsibility and confidence in the team’s mix of young and experienced players.
Pakistan have left several established names, including Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi, out of the T20I squad. However, Farhan said experienced players could return to the national side in the future.
Pakistan Look for an Aggressive Approach
Pakistan will rely on an attacking batting combination featuring Fakhar Zaman, Saim Ayub, Hasan Nawaz and Maaz Sadaqat. Shadab Khan also brings valuable experience to the squad.
Meanwhile, uncapped players Razaullah and Mohammad Imran Randhawa have earned places in the team. Fast bowler Naseem Shah could also return to T20I action after last facing Sri Lanka in February.
Pakistan’s bowling attack includes Abrar Ahmed, Shadab, Sufiyan Moqim and Arafat Minhas. Saim Ayub offers an additional spin option, while Naseem and other fast bowlers strengthen the pace attack.
Sri Lanka Aim to Challenge Pakistan
Sri Lanka will enter the series under captain Kusal Mendis. The visitors have also made changes, leaving out former captain Charith Asalanka and missing leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga because of injury.
Mendis acknowledged Hasaranga’s absence but expressed confidence in the remaining squad. He also highlighted the team’s familiarity with Pakistani conditions, noting that several players have experience in the Pakistan Super League.
Series Schedule and Head-to-Head Record
The teams will play all three T20Is in Rawalpindi. The second match is scheduled for October 11, followed by the third on October 13.
Pakistan have won 18 of their 30 T20I meetings with Sri Lanka, while the visitors have recorded 12 victories. The opening match also marks the 250th international cricket fixture between the two countries.
Pakistan will look to use home advantage and their new leadership combination to start the series strongly, while Sri Lanka will aim to overcome key absences and challenge the hosts.
