Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Director of High-Performance Aaqib Javed has questioned Pakistan’s chances of winning the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup. He believes the national team must improve its position among the world’s best before aiming for another global title.
His remarks have started a fresh debate among cricket fans. Many supporters expect Pakistan to compete for every ICC trophy. However, Aaqib believes the team must first deliver consistent performances against top-ranked opponents.
Aaqib Urges a Realistic Approach
“We are lying to ourselves if we think we can win the World Cup while being ranked seventh and eighth in the world,” Aaqib Javed said.
He explained that Pakistan has not consistently remained among the world’s top four ODI teams. Despite that, many fans still expect the side to win every ICC event.
“That cannot happen. Until we become one of the top four teams in the ICC rankings, we cannot consider ourselves capable of winning,” he said.
Pakistan currently sits fifth in the ICC Men’s ODI rankings with a rating of 100. However, the standings may change as teams continue playing bilateral series before the World Cup.
Strong ODI Performances Remain the Priority
Aaqib has repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining a strong ODI ranking. He believes consistent performances in bilateral series are essential for long-term success.
He also warned that poor results could weaken Pakistan’s position. As an example, he mentioned Sri Lanka and the West Indies. Both teams missed direct qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup and entered the qualifying tournament.
According to Aaqib, Pakistan should first remain among the leading ODI nations. After achieving that goal, the team can focus on adapting to conditions in South Africa. The country will host the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Qualification Rules Have Changed
However, Aaqib’s comments have raised questions because the qualification system has changed since the previous World Cup.
Under the revised format, Pakistan is widely expected to qualify directly for the tournament. Therefore, the risk of playing qualification matches appears much lower than before.
Even so, Aaqib’s main message remains clear. Pakistan must improve its consistency and compete regularly with the world’s strongest teams. Only then can the national side become a genuine contender for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
