Pakistan has officially begun preparations to host the 14th South Asian Games in March 2027. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved Rs11 billion to support the organization of the regional multi-sport event.
The funding will help authorities prepare venues, improve infrastructure, and complete administrative arrangements before the Games begin.
Officials have also been instructed to start preparations without delay.
Rs11 Billion Approved for Event Preparations
According to official sources, the approved funds will be released in phases. The allocation will cover stadium upgrades, logistics, opening and closing ceremonies, and other operational requirements.
Authorities are also expected to spend part of the budget on organizational and administrative preparations. The phased funding aims to ensure steady progress as the event approaches.
South Asian Games Secretariat to Be Established
A dedicated South Asian Games Secretariat will be established in Islamabad. The Secretariat will oversee planning and coordinate preparations for the tournament.
Officials believe centralized management will improve coordination among federal and provincial authorities. Consequently, preparations are expected to move forward more efficiently.
Pakistan to Host the Games After More Than Two Decades
The 2027 edition will mark the return of the South Asian Games to Pakistan after 22 years. Officials have stated that sports venues in Lahore, Islamabad, and Faisalabad are already operational.
However, additional improvements will be carried out before the competition begins. The event represents an important milestone for Pakistan’s sporting calendar.
More Than 3,500 Athletes Expected to Participate
Organizers expect more than 3,500 athletes from eight South Asian countries to compete. The Games will feature competitions across 27 sporting disciplines. Large contingents from India and Afghanistan are also expected to participate.
The event will bring together some of the region’s leading athletes while providing opportunities for emerging talent.
Security Remains a Top Priority
Security planning has become one of the main focuses for organizers. The local organizing committee plans to establish Games Villages under strict security arrangements.
Authorities aim to provide a safe environment for athletes, officials, and support staff throughout the competition. Comprehensive security measures are expected to remain in place during the entire event.
Lahore Set to Host Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony is expected to take place in Lahore. Officials believe the ceremony could become one of the event’s biggest attractions. It is also expected to attract significant television audiences across South Asia.
Preparations for cultural performances and ceremonial activities will continue alongside infrastructure development.
Opportunity to Showcase Pakistan’s Sporting Capacity
Officials view the South Asian Games as an opportunity to highlight Pakistan’s ability to host major international sporting events.
The tournament is also expected to strengthen regional sporting cooperation. Moreover, it will provide valuable exposure for young athletes from participating countries.
With federal funding now approved, preparations have formally entered the implementation phase as Pakistan works toward hosting one of South Asia’s largest multi-sport competitions.
