Pakistan and Tajikistan have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, energy, connectivity and defence. The two countries also pledged to expand cultural ties and people-to-people exchanges.
The understanding emerged during a meeting between Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Tajik Prime Minister Qohir Rasulzoda in Dushanbe.
Leaders Discuss Trade and Economic Integration
During the meeting, both leaders reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to deepen economic cooperation. Ishaq Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to working closely with Tajikistan to promote regional peace and economic integration.
Dar also congratulated Tajikistan on the 35th anniversary of its independence. He thanked Rasulzoda for welcoming the Pakistani delegation and facilitating arrangements for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government meeting.
The discussions highlighted opportunities to strengthen economic links and expand cooperation across several sectors.
Energy and Regional Connectivity Remain Priorities
Pakistan and Tajikistan identified energy and connectivity as important areas for closer engagement. Stronger cooperation in these fields could support regional trade and improve economic links between Central and South Asia.
Both sides also discussed defence and cultural cooperation. They expressed a shared commitment to encouraging greater interaction between their citizens.
However, the latest meeting did not announce specific new projects or financial commitments. Further discussions will determine how the two countries translate their commitments into practical initiatives.
Climate Change and Water Security on Agenda
The leaders also exchanged views on regional developments and stressed the need for joint efforts to address climate change and water security.
Dar highlighted Pakistan’s experience in disaster management and pointed to opportunities for cooperation through the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Such collaboration could help both countries strengthen disaster preparedness and share relevant expertise.
SCO Meeting Provides Platform for Engagement
Dar is visiting Dushanbe to lead Pakistan’s delegation to the SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting. The gathering provides a platform for member states to discuss economic cooperation, regional connectivity and shared challenges.
Pakistan and Tajikistan’s latest discussions reflect their interest in closer regional partnerships. Continued engagement will be important in turning their commitments into measurable progress.
