Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has urged concrete action to prevent Afghan soil from becoming a base for terrorism against neighbouring countries. Dar made the remarks during an OIC Contact Group meeting on Afghanistan on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
He expressed concern over terrorist groups operating inside Afghanistan. He also recalled Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.
Dar Calls for Action Against Terrorist Groups
Dar highlighted the recent terrorist attack in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said the attack showed the serious threat that terrorism continues to pose.
The foreign minister called for firm action against terrorist groups and their alleged sanctuaries.
He urged the Afghan Taliban to fulfil Afghanistan’s international commitments. Dar also called for measures to prevent Afghan territory from supporting attacks against neighbouring states.
Furthermore, he urged the Afghan authorities to remove restrictions on women and girls.
Dar also called for politically inclusive governance in Afghanistan. He stressed the need to support the resettlement and integration of Afghan returnees.
Meanwhile, he asked the international community to provide sufficient funding for Afghanistan’s humanitarian needs and economic development.
Dar reiterated Pakistan’s support for a stable and prosperous Afghanistan. He said Pakistan wants Afghanistan to remain at peace with its neighbours.
Dar Raises Kashmir Issue at OIC Meeting
Dar also addressed the OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir.
He thanked OIC members and the organisation’s human rights commission for their continued support for Kashmiris.
According to Pakistan’s position, Kashmiris have waited for decades to exercise their right to self-determination under the UN framework.
Dar accused India of taking measures that Pakistan says could change the demographic character of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
He also raised concerns about restrictions on political and civic activity in the region.
The foreign minister urged OIC members to maintain a unified position on Kashmir at international forums.
Indus Waters Treaty Remains a Dispute
Dar also criticised India’s decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in abeyance.
He argued that the treaty remains a binding international agreement. Dar said it does not allow either side to suspend it unilaterally.
He further argued that domestic law cannot override international obligations.
The dispute over the treaty has added another point of tension between Pakistan and India.
Dar said countries must respect international agreements in good faith.
Dar Joins Shehbaz Sharif at UNGA
Dar is in New York as part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s delegation for the 81st UN General Assembly session.
The prime minister arrived in New York on September 21. He is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 25.
Dar has also held several diplomatic meetings during the UNGA session.
His engagements cover Afghanistan, regional security, Kashmir and other international issues.
