PESHAWAR: Pakistani security forces shot down eight drones after they reportedly entered the country’s airspace from Afghanistan, 24NewsHD reported on Wednesday, citing security sources.
According to the sources, forces intercepted four drones near the Torkham border, while they brought down another four in mountainous areas near the border with Kohat.
Security sources said Pakistan’s air defence system detected and engaged all eight aircraft. They claimed the armed forces and Pakistan Air Force prevented an attempt to target public places. However, the report provided no independent confirmation of the drones’ operators or intended targets.
The sources also accused Afghanistan’s Taliban administration of supporting militant groups, an allegation attributed to Pakistani security officials.
Border Tensions Rise After Reported Infiltration Attempt
Meanwhile, security officials said Pakistani forces had prevented militants from crossing into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kurram district from Afghanistan overnight.
According to the officials, militants attempted to enter from areas bordering Nangarhar and Paktia provinces.
Following the reported infiltration attempt, Afghan Taliban forces allegedly opened fire on Pakistani border posts. Pakistani troops responded by targeting several Taliban border positions, security sources said.
The claims regarding the cross-border exchanges were not independently verified in the supplied report.
Pakistan Maintains Heightened Border Surveillance
The developments follow recent Pakistani military operations against militant targets in the border region.
Pakistan’s Information Ministry said on September 21 that airstrikes and ground operations had killed more than 28 militants.
Furthermore, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir visited Corps Headquarters Peshawar a day earlier, where officials briefed him on security conditions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, counterterrorism operations and border management.
Security forces said they continue to closely monitor the frontier and remain prepared to respond to further threats amid heightened Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions.
