The Ministry of Interior has revealed details of passport fee collections in Pakistan over the past five fiscal years while confirming that the government has no immediate plans to reduce passport charges.
In a written response submitted to the Senate, the ministry disclosed that Pakistan collected Rs 219.93 billion in passport fees between fiscal years 2021-22 and 2025-26. The response came after Senator Muhammad Talha Mahmood raised a question about passport charges.
According to the figures, the government collected Rs 21.618 billion in 2021-22, Rs 34.495 billion in 2022-23 and Rs50.906 billion in 2023-24. Collections subsequently increased to Rs 64.392 billion in 2024-25 before declining to Rs 48.52 billion in 2025-26.
Government Rules Out Reduction in Passport Fees
The Ministry of Interior informed the Senate that authorities are not considering any proposal to reduce passport fees. It explained that electronic passports involve higher production and procurement costs than conventional machine-readable passports.
Moreover, Pakistan is gradually transitioning towards an electronic passport system to modernise travel documentation and improve security standards.
