KARACHI: Pakistan achieved a new milestone in its energy sector as Engro Elengy Terminal successfully received and began unloading the countryโs largest liquefied natural gas cargo. Officials hailed the operation as a major boost for national energy security.
Record-breaking Q-Flex vessel arrives
The massive shipment reached Port Qasim on May 13 aboard a Q-Flex class carrier named MV Al Kharaitiyat. The vessel delivered more than 210,000 cubic metres โ equivalent to around 92,510 metric tonnes โ of LNG from Qatar. Terminal teams carefully managed tidal conditions and draft limitations to complete the complex dual-parcel unloading safely and efficiently.
Moreover, the entire process involved close coordination among several key players. These included the Port Qasim Authority, Excelerate Energy, vessel owner Nakilat, QatarEnergy, Sui Southern Gas Company, and Pakistan State Oil. Their joint efforts ensured smooth berthing and discharge operations at the Engro terminal.
Strengthens energy supply amid rising demand
According to industry experts, the arrival of this unprecedented volume of cargo comes at a crucial juncture, as Pakistan remains heavily dependent on LNG imports to cater to its rising energy demands. The influx of more natural gas into the country is expected to help enhance availability and electricity production throughout the country.
Both officials and operators have expressed their satisfaction regarding the seamless completion of the operation despite some technological difficulties. This is indeed good news for energy stakeholders in Pakistan, who have been eagerly awaiting such a breakthrough. Given Pakistanโs struggle to fulfill its energy requirements, such developments play a key role in sustaining industries and households.
