Pakistan Railways has declared an emergency and cancelled all leave for field officers for three months. The decision aims to improve railway safety, strengthen operational monitoring, and ensure safer train services across the country.
Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi issued the directives to address safety concerns and improve supervision. The emergency will remain in effect until December 31, 2026, requiring officers to maintain closer oversight of railway operations.
Officers Directed to Monitor Train Operations
Under the new instructions, railway field officers must visit operational sites on Sundays as well. They must personally supervise train movements and monitor conditions to identify potential risks and address operational issues promptly.
Moreover, the department has directed railway officers travelling to other cities for official assignments to use trains. This measure will allow officials to assess railway services and observe operational conditions during their journeys.
Chief engineers from the civil and mechanical departments must submit daily reports to the Ministry of Railways. Additionally, the ministry has ordered the head of safety to provide daily updates on safety arrangements and operational performance.
Emergency Measures Follow Rising Train Accidents
The emergency comes amid growing concerns over railway accidents involving passenger and freight trains. Reports indicate that Pakistan Railways has recorded more than 55 accidents since January 1, raising questions about operational safety and maintenance standards.
Several incidents involving derailments and damaged railway infrastructure have highlighted the need for stronger monitoring. Consequently, the latest directives seek to improve accountability and ensure officials address potential hazards before they cause serious incidents.
Minister Hanif Abbasi said the government remained committed to providing passengers with the safest possible journey. The department will now focus on regular inspections, daily reporting, and closer supervision throughout the emergency period.
However, the effectiveness of these measures will depend on consistent implementation and timely corrective action. Railway authorities face increasing pressure to improve safety standards, protect passengers, and restore public confidence in train travel across Pakistan.
