Pakistan Railways has announced plans to upgrade two popular passenger trains as part of its efforts to modernize railway services and improve facilities for travellers.
Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi informed the National Assembly on Friday that Awam Express would receive an upgrade starting November 2. Meanwhile, authorities plan to complete the Khyber Mail upgrade by the end of January.
The initiative aims to improve passenger experiences and bring railway services closer to modern standards. Additionally, Pakistan Railways is pursuing broader improvements across its passenger network.
Awam Express And Khyber Mail Set For Improvements
During Question Hour, Abbasi shared details of the planned upgrades while responding to questions from lawmakers. He also confirmed that the department was working on improving other passenger trains, including Hazara Express.
The minister said Pakistan Railways wanted to provide better facilities across the country without favouring any particular province. Therefore, the department plans to introduce improvements across its wider railway network.
These upgrades form part of ongoing efforts to improve passenger comfort and strengthen railway operations. However, authorities have not disclosed the complete details of the facilities planned for both trains.
Pakistan Railways Expands Digital Ticketing
Alongside infrastructure improvements, the railway department has introduced digital ticket booking facilities through the Rabta mobile application. Passengers can now purchase tickets through the application without visiting railway booking offices.
Abbasi further revealed that Pakistan Railways had installed 329 point-of-sale machines across 236 booking centres. These machines support payments through various banks, Easypaisa, JazzCash and QR codes.
Responding to another question, the minister disclosed that passenger demand on a train operating in Quetta had reached 190 percent of its seating capacity. This highlights the growing pressure on railway services and the need for better facilities.
