Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed aviation authorities to explore direct flights between Pakistan and the Maldives. The move aims to improve tourism, business travel, and bilateral trade.
He announced the initiative during the Pakistan-Maldives Business Forum in Islamabad on Thursday. Visiting Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also attended the event.
Pakistan and Maldives Plan Direct Air Links
Shehbaz said direct flights between Islamabad, Karachi, and Malé could strengthen economic relations.
He instructed Pakistan’s aviation authorities to prepare an urgent feasibility study involving Pakistan International Airlines or another domestic carrier.
Meanwhile, President Muizzu announced that the Maldives’ national airline, Maldivian, plans to establish direct flights between Malé and Karachi.
However, neither country has confirmed a launch date.
Both Countries Target $200 Million Trade
The leaders reaffirmed their agreement to increase bilateral trade from approximately $13 million to $200 million within two years.
Shehbaz stressed that improved air and shipping connections would help achieve this target.
He also called for reliable maritime services linking Karachi or Gwadar with Malé.
A Pakistani delegation of government officials and business representatives is expected to visit the Maldives soon.
Maldives Invites Pakistani Businesses to Invest
President Muizzu encouraged Pakistani companies to explore opportunities in agriculture, healthcare, tourism, construction, and renewable energy.
He highlighted demand for pharmaceutical products, food processing, cold storage, and infrastructure development.
The Maldives also aims to generate 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028.
Both leaders emphasized stronger private-sector partnerships and better regional connectivity.
The proposed flights could create new opportunities for travellers and businesses, although airline schedules and commercial arrangements remain under discussion.
