Pakistan has strongly condemned the continued threats issued by Yemen’s Houthi militia against Saudi Arabia and commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
In a statement, the Foreign Office (FO) warned that such actions endanger regional stability, disrupt global trade and threaten freedom of navigation.
The statement came after the Houthis announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia earlier this week.
Foreign Office Warns Against Threats to Maritime Trade
The Foreign Office said Pakistan “unequivocally” condemns threats targeting Saudi Arabia and commercial vessels operating in the Red Sea.
According to the FO, these actions undermine the rules-based maritime order and jeopardise the uninterrupted flow of international commerce.
Furthermore, the ministry described threats against commercial shipping and trade with Saudi Arabia as unacceptable and contrary to international law.
The FO also expressed concern over reports that vessels involved in lawful trade with the Kingdom could become targets.
Pakistan Reaffirms Support for Saudi Arabia
Pakistan reiterated its commitment to protecting its maritime interests and national security.
The Foreign Office stated, “Pakistan reaffirms that any hostile act against Pakistani-flagged vessels or Pakistani maritime interests will be regarded as a grave threat to Pakistan’s national security and sovereign interests.”
Moreover, the statement added that Pakistan reserves the right to take all necessary measures, including lawful self-defence under international law, to protect its maritime assets.
The FO also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the security, sovereignty, territorial integrity and prosperity of Saudi Arabia.
Red Sea Tensions Raise Global Concerns
Meanwhile, the Foreign Office urged all parties to exercise restraint and resolve disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.
It also called for full respect for international law and the protection of international maritime shipping.
Earlier this week, the Houthis announced a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia, claiming the move responded to what they described as an unjust blockade on Yemen.
Analysts believe the announcement could disrupt shipping activity even if no vessels are attacked.
According to experts, any closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could significantly affect Saudi oil exports to Asia and increase uncertainty in global energy markets.
