KARACHI: Pakistan has avoided a potential energy crisis after an emergency maritime operation safely brought a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier to Port Qasim despite severe monsoon weather and dangerous sea conditions. The successful mission ensured uninterrupted fuel supplies and strengthened the country’s energy security.
According to 24NewsHD, the operation was completed through Port Qasim’s 49-kilometre navigational channel. The Port Qasim Authority described the achievement as a landmark success, saying it helped protect Pakistan’s energy needs during challenging weather conditions.
Emergency Operation Secures Critical LNG Supply
The Port Qasim Authority safely guided the LNG carrier “SK Resolute” through rough seas before berthing it at the terminal. Officials said the operation required exceptional planning and expertise because monsoon conditions had made navigation extremely difficult.
A Port Qasim spokesperson said the mission was conducted under emergency circumstances. Earlier, two scheduled QatarEnergy LNG shipments had returned because of force majeure linked to regional tensions, creating concerns over the country’s fuel supply.
Consequently, Pakistan LNG Limited secured an emergency spot cargo that was already at sea to fill the expected supply gap. The timely arrangement prevented disruptions to the national energy system and ensured a continuous flow of natural gas.
Largest LNG Cargo Handled at Terminal
According to the spokesperson, the vessel delivered 171,951 cubic metres of LNG, making it the largest cargo ever received at the Pakistan GasPort Consortium Limited (PGPCL) terminal. With a beam measuring 47.8 metres, the ship also became the widest LNG carrier to dock at Port Qasim during the monsoon season.
Officials said the successful operation played a crucial role in maintaining uninterrupted electricity generation across the country. As a result, millions of domestic and industrial consumers avoided possible power shortages.
Furthermore, the Port Qasim Authority said the achievement reflected its operational readiness, professional expertise, and ability to manage complex maritime challenges. It added that the successful berthing demonstrated the authority’s commitment to protecting Pakistan’s national interests and ensuring energy security during difficult circumstances.
