Pakistan has officially ended the issuance of machine-readable passports (MRPs), shifting to electronic passports for new applicants from October 23, 2026.
The policy applies to passport offices across Pakistan and Pakistani diplomatic missions abroad. Under the new system, citizens applying for a new passport or renewal will receive an e-passport instead of the traditional machine-readable document.
Existing Passports Remain Valid
The transition does not mean that current passport holders must immediately replace their documents.
Authorities have clarified that existing machine-readable passports will remain valid until their printed expiry dates. Holders can continue using them for international travel under the applicable rules.
However, once an existing passport expires, applicants will need to obtain an e-passport instead of renewing the older version.
The government had initially planned to implement the change on October 15. However, the deadline was subsequently revised, allowing machine-readable passports to remain available through October 22.
E-Passports Offer Enhanced Security
An electronic passport contains a contactless electronic chip that stores the holder’s personal and biometric information. This technology helps authorities verify identities more securely and detect attempts at document tampering or forgery.
The new system is part of Pakistan’s efforts to modernise travel documentation and bring passport services in line with evolving international standards.
E-passports may also support electronic immigration gates at compatible airports, potentially making identity checks more efficient for eligible travellers.
What Applicants Should Know
People applying for passports from October 23 onward should prepare to apply for the electronic version. The transition covers applications processed domestically and through Pakistani missions overseas.
Applicants should check the latest fee structure and processing requirements before visiting a passport office.
The shift marks a significant change in Pakistan’s passport system, while existing documents remain usable until their expiry dates.
