Pakistan and Türkiye are preparing to restart offshore oil and gas exploration after nearly two decades, with a Turkish seismic research vessel expected to reach Karachi between November 17 and 20, 2026.
The vessel, operated by Turkish Petroleum Offshore Company (TPOC), will begin surveying Pakistan’s offshore waters for potential hydrocarbon deposits. The initiative aims to strengthen energy cooperation between the two countries and improve Pakistan’s domestic energy security.
Turkish Vessel to Arrive in Karachi This Month
Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik chaired a high-level meeting to review preparations for the vessel’s arrival. Officials discussed operational, maritime, security and logistical arrangements to ensure the smooth commencement of exploration activities.
Malik described the development as an important milestone in Pakistan-Türkiye relations. He also expressed his intention to personally welcome the vessel when it reaches Karachi.
Furthermore, the minister assured the Turkish delegation of Pakistan’s full support and directed relevant departments to coordinate closely. Representatives from petroleum, defence, maritime and interior departments attended the meeting to discuss the project’s requirements.
Partnership Targets Untapped Oil and Gas Resources
Pakistan reopened its offshore exploration sector through the 2025 bidding round after an 18-year gap. The government offered 40 offshore blocks in the Indus and Makran basins, attracting interest from domestic and international energy companies.
Türkiye’s state-owned petroleum company joined Pakistani energy firms through partnership agreements covering several exploration blocks. The collaboration aims to introduce international expertise, modern technology and investment into Pakistan’s offshore energy sector.
Pakistan’s offshore waters remain largely unexplored, with only 18 wells drilled since independence. Although geological assessments indicate significant oil and gas potential, commercial discoveries remain uncertain until exploration and drilling confirm viable deposits.
The renewed exploration campaign could eventually reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported energy and strengthen domestic supplies. However, the upcoming seismic survey represents an initial step rather than confirmation of new oil or gas reserves.
