Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan says the Makkah Alliance between Türkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia has reached an advanced stage.
Fidan said the three countries are working to turn their political commitment into practical cooperation. He also discussed Israel, Saudi Arabia’s security and the ongoing Iran-US conflict during a television interview.
Fidan Calls for a Different Israeli Policy
Fidan said Türkiye hopes Israel adopts a foreign policy focused on peace, respect and cooperation.
He warned that continued policies could increase Israel’s international isolation and affect the wider region.
Fidan also said Türkiye would not respond to what he described as “cheap provocations.”
“As our President has repeatedly announced, Turkey is not a country that falls for cheap provocations,” he said.
Makkah Alliance Nears Operational Stage
Fidan said the Makkah Alliance has made significant progress since Türkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed the joint defence agreement in August.
“The Makkah Coalition is currently at a very good stage. A very strong will has been shown, and we are striving with all our strength to turn this will into action,” Fidan said.
He added that the three countries are now working on the alliance’s organisational structure.
“Currently, steps are being taken to establish the organizational structure. In particular, the precise work related to the creation of the secretariat mentioned in the agreement and the establishment of the related military command centre is almost complete.”
Recent statements indicate that the alliance is moving toward establishing its headquarters and assigning personnel. Türkiye has also said the framework remains open to other regional countries.
Türkiye Offers Support to Saudi Arabia
Fidan said Türkiye remains concerned about attacks targeting Saudi Arabia.
“We have witnessed very serious attacks on Saudi Arabia’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and infrastructure,” he said.
He added that member states have responsibilities toward one another under the agreement.
Fidan also said Saudi Arabia should remain separate from the ongoing Iran-US conflict.
“We do not accept that Saudi Arabia becomes part of the ongoing conflict between Iran and America,” he said.
He added that Türkiye would consider helping Saudi Arabia with military needs, particularly in technical areas. Reuters reported that Fidan made the offer amid intensified Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia.
Alliance Based on Collective Defence
The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement creates a collective defence framework among Türkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
Under the agreement, an attack against one member is treated as an attack against all three parties.
Fidan previously described the arrangement as technically similar to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, while stressing that the agreement does not target any specific country.
The alliance aims to strengthen regional security, stability, peace and cooperation while maintaining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its members.
Fidan Discusses Ukraine War
The Turkish foreign minister also commented on the war in Ukraine.
“There are some plans to end the war in Ukraine, but at this stage, achieving sustainable results seems difficult for them,” Fidan said.
He added that diplomatic efforts should continue and urged countries not to lose hope of achieving a lasting settlement.
