Pakistan and Germany have marked 75 years of diplomatic relations, highlighting opportunities to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, education and technology.
The German Embassy hosted a reception in Islamabad to celebrate German Unity Day and the longstanding relationship between the two countries. The event brought together government officials, diplomats and other guests.
Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani attended as the chief guest. A German Air Force musical band performed the national anthems of both countries during the ceremony.
Gilani Calls for Stronger Economic Cooperation
Gilani said Pakistan-Germany relations rest on mutual respect and shared interests. He highlighted opportunities to expand trade and investment between the two countries.
He also called for greater cooperation in defence, information technology, energy and industrial development. In addition, he stressed the importance of expanding educational opportunities for Pakistani students at German institutions.
Gilani recognised Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Dr Ruth Pfau as important figures in the history of friendship between the two nations.
Germany Highlights Trade and Climate Cooperation
Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr Musadik Malik described Germany as Pakistan’s largest partner in Europe. He said Pakistan would meet the requirements of the European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus trade arrangement.
Malik also proposed establishing a Green University in Pakistan with German support. The institution would focus on climate change and related challenges.
He highlighted Iqbal’s educational experience in Germany and Dr Ruth Pfau’s contribution to healthcare in Pakistan. Pfau helped establish more than 100 centres for leprosy treatment.
Ambassador Emphasises Growing Bilateral Ties
German Ambassador Ina Lepel said cultural and commercial relations between the countries had expanded over the years. However, she noted that further work remained necessary to strengthen the partnership.
Pakistan and Germany established diplomatic relations on October 15, 1951. Their cooperation now spans trade, development, education, culture and climate-related initiatives.
The celebration concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony and a musical performance by the German Air Force band.
