One prisoner was killed and several others were injured during a violent clash between inmates at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore.
According to jail officials, the confrontation reportedly began over the closing of the prison kitchen during meal service. The incident prompted Punjab authorities to order an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the clash.
Prisoner Dies After Jail Clash
The deceased prisoner was identified as 42-year-old Ashraf, who was serving a sentence in a murder case. Ashraf sustained serious injuries during the altercation and was shifted to General Hospital Lahore for medical treatment. However, doctors later confirmed his death. His body was subsequently moved to the hospital morgue.
Another prisoner, Falak Sher, was also injured during the clash and remains under treatment at General Hospital.
Falak Sher is incarcerated in connection with a narcotics case, according to jail officials.
Clash Reportedly Started Over Kitchen Closure
Jail sources said the dispute erupted over the closure of the kitchen during meal service. The disagreement then escalated into a physical confrontation between groups of prisoners. One prisoner reportedly sustained injuries from a sharp-edged weapon during the violence.
However, authorities are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident.
Kot Lakhpat police also reached the jail and began legal proceedings following the clash.
Punjab Orders Three-Member Inquiry
Punjab Home Secretary took immediate notice of the incident and ordered a high-level inquiry.
A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the clash. The committee includes:
- DIG Prisons Lahore Mohsin Rafiq
- DIG Prisons Headquarters Shaukat Feroze
- DIG Prisons Inspection Naveed Rauf
The inquiry committee has started recording statements from injured prisoners and jail staff to determine how the violence began and who was responsible.
Authorities said those found responsible would face action according to the law.
Jail Officials Monitor Injured Prisoners
Following the incident, IG Prisons Punjab Mian Salik Jalal and Additional Secretary Prisons Roman Borana visited General Hospital. The officials monitored the treatment of injured prisoners and reviewed their medical condition. Meanwhile, the inquiry committee will examine statements from prisoners and prison staff as part of its investigation.
For now, authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the clash and the circumstances that led to Ashraf’s death.
