Oil prices edged higher in early Asian trading on Tuesday after crude benchmarks suffered a sharp decline. Renewed concerns over military tensions in the Middle East have unsettled energy markets.
Brent crude futures climbed 48 cents, or 0.5%, to $105.25 a barrel. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 47 cents, also rising 0.5%, to $96.93.
The modest recovery followed Monday’s steep sell-off, when oil prices dropped more than 7% amid growing hopes for diplomatic progress.
Why Did Oil Prices Fall Sharply on Monday?
Crude prices tumbled on Monday as diplomatic contacts between Iranian and Qatari officials raised hopes for easing regional tensions. Investors also anticipated possible improvements in Middle East oil supplies.
Brent crude futures dropped $8.66, or 7.63%, to settle at $104.77 a barrel. However, another market update put Brent at $104.96, down $8.47, or 7.47%, during the session.
US WTI crude also recorded significant losses. It fell $7.50, or 7.2%, to $96.62 in the reported session.
During trading, Brent reached a low of $104.49, while WTI touched $96.44. These declines reflected market optimism about a possible diplomatic breakthrough.
US Strike Reports Raise Fresh Concerns
Despite Monday’s relief, reports of a US strike on Iran’s Qeshm Island revived fears of further escalation. The developments renewed concerns about the security of regional energy supplies.
Reports indicated that US officials described the strikes as defensive measures. Their stated objective was to prevent Iran from targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strategic waterway remains central to concerns about oil transportation. Consequently, any escalation could intensify uncertainty over crude shipments and market stability.
Can Diplomacy Prevent Another Oil Price Surge?
Although military tensions remain a concern, Washington and Tehran have signalled willingness to continue diplomatic discussions.
Iran confirmed ongoing contacts with the United States after Qatar-mediated talks ended without a breakthrough. However, the discussions reportedly produced new proposals.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty about resuming military strikes. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the possibility of reaching an agreement with Tehran.
These diplomatic signals helped support hopes for a broader easing of tensions. However, the latest military developments have complicated the outlook.
Oil Markets Remain Sensitive to Middle East Developments
The sharp decline followed by Tuesday’s recovery highlights the market’s sensitivity to geopolitical developments. Traders are weighing diplomatic progress against the risk of renewed confrontation.
For now, oil prices remain influenced by uncertainty surrounding the US-Iran situation and regional crude supplies. Therefore, further developments could shape the direction of energy markets in the coming sessions.
