Nine people died after a private jet crashed into a residential neighbourhood in southern Florida, near US President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. The Learjet 60 went down on Sunday in Palm Beach County, creating a massive fireball and leaving a burning crater near a busy road.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard the aircraft had died. He described the incident as a horrific tragedy.
Jet Was Heading Towards the Bahamas
According to officials, the aircraft departed from Austin, Texas, and was travelling towards the Bahamas. The crash occurred near Cresthaven, less than 11 kilometres from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property.
Witness footage shared on social media appeared to show the aircraft descending almost vertically before hitting the ground. The impact triggered a large explosion and sent flames into the surrounding area.
Stormy weather and thunderstorms had also affected parts of southern Florida that day.
Trump Had Left the Area Before Crash
Trump had been at Mar-a-Lago earlier on Sunday. He departed from the nearby airport aboard Air Force One approximately an hour before the crash.
The incident therefore occurred shortly after his departure from the area.
However, authorities have not linked the crash to the president or his movements.
Federal Agencies Launch Investigation
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident.
Officials have not yet established what caused the Learjet to crash. Investigators will examine the aircraft, flight records and other evidence to determine the circumstances.
The crash has raised concerns after a private aircraft went down in a populated neighbourhood. Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the exact cause of the deadly incident.
