A suspected newborn trafficking network has surfaced at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. Police arrested a couple after hospital security staff stopped them while they allegedly tried to collect a newborn baby.
The incident came to light on Monday. PIMS security officials noticed the couple behaving suspiciously and questioned them. They later submitted a complaint to Karachi Company Police.
Couple Allegedly Paid for Newborn
According to the complaint, an individual allegedly offered the couple a newborn in exchange for money. The exact payment amount remains unclear.
After allegedly making the payment, the couple arrived at PIMS to collect the baby. However, security staff intercepted them before they could take custody of the newborn.
Officials also handed police details of an online payment. The transaction reportedly went to a person identified as Muhammad Shahzeb.
Meanwhile, the couple allegedly discussed the arrangement with a man named Muhammad Imran through WhatsApp.
Police Investigate Suspected Network
PIMS security officials have asked police to examine the phone numbers and financial records linked to the case. Investigators will also check the contacts involved in the alleged arrangement.
The complaint also mentioned an earlier incident at PIMS. Security staff had reportedly stopped a woman and a girl in connection with a similar case.
Therefore, hospital officials suspect that more people may have links to the alleged network. They have urged police to conduct a detailed and impartial investigation.
Authorities Search for Other Suspects
Karachi Company Police have started investigating the alleged payment and attempted transfer of the newborn.
Police are expected to examine digital communications and financial transactions. Investigators will also work to identify the alleged individuals involved in the suspected trafficking network.
Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the newborn or confirmed the full scope of the alleged network.
