A new rooftop solar charging system is offering electric vehicle owners a way to generate electricity while driving and parked, potentially reducing their reliance on conventional charging stations.
The GoSun EV Solar Charger uses foldable solar panels mounted on a vehicle’s roof to capture sunlight and generate electricity. The system can reportedly deliver up to 1,100 watts of solar power under suitable conditions, providing additional driving range without requiring a fixed charging installation.
One electric vehicle owner, Michael Apple, recently demonstrated the technology and shared his experience using it for approximately two weeks. He said the system had covered all his vehicle’s charging needs during that period, adding around 15 to 20 miles of driving range daily.
Foldable Panels Generate Power on the Move
The system features solar panels that fold into a compact rooftop enclosure when not fully deployed. When the vehicle is parked, the panels can unfold to expose a larger surface area and capture more sunlight.
The manufacturer says the panels can continue producing approximately 200 watts of power while folded inside the enclosure. This allows the system to generate electricity even when the vehicle is moving, although output depends on sunlight and operating conditions.
Apple reported a peak output of around 1,054 watts, close to the manufacturer’s advertised maximum of 1,100 watts. The system is designed to attach to compatible rooftop crossbars, making it suitable for vehicles that can accommodate the installation.
Battery Storage Makes EV Charging Possible
Instead of sending fluctuating solar power directly to the vehicle, the charger stores electricity in a 2,400-watt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery. An inverter then converts the stored energy into electricity suitable for Level 1 electric vehicle charging.
This arrangement helps manage changing solar output and provides a more practical way to charge an electric vehicle using portable solar equipment.
The GoSun EV Solar Charger is listed at $3,999. Although the technology could benefit drivers seeking supplementary charging, its performance will depend on weather, sunlight exposure, vehicle efficiency and daily driving requirements.
