Pakistan and Guatemala have signed an agreement establishing a framework for regular bilateral political consultations between the two countries.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar signed the agreement with Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martínez Alvarado in New York on September 23. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly session.
The agreement is intended to provide a structured mechanism for continued diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and Guatemala City.
Dar Meets Guatemalan Foreign Minister
Following the signing, Dar held a bilateral meeting with Martínez Alvarado.
The two ministers expressed satisfaction with the state of Pakistan-Guatemala relations and welcomed the new consultations mechanism.
According to Guatemala’s Foreign Ministry, the two sides also discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in political, economic, academic and technical fields. They also discussed coordination on multilateral issues.
The new framework is expected to provide a regular channel for discussions on issues of mutual interest.
Guatemala Appreciates Pakistan’s Diplomatic Role
During the meeting, Martínez Alvarado commended Pakistan’s role in diplomatic and mediation efforts aimed at promoting regional peace and stability.
The two ministers also discussed the effects of ongoing global crises on energy supplies.
They stressed the importance of maintaining the free flow of energy and maritime trade. Both sides also highlighted dialogue and diplomacy as important tools for addressing regional challenges.
Both Sides Stress Importance of UN
Pakistan and Guatemala also reaffirmed the importance of multilateralism in addressing global challenges.
The two countries expressed continued support for multilateral institutions, particularly the United Nations.
Martínez Alvarado also acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding contribution to UN peacekeeping operations.
The discussion comes as both foreign ministers participate in the UN General Assembly’s high-level week in New York.

The agreement creates an institutional framework for regular consultations between the foreign ministries of Pakistan and Guatemala.
Such a mechanism can provide both sides with a structured platform to discuss bilateral relations, regional developments and areas of cooperation.
