ISLAMABAD: Electricity prices have been increased across Pakistan, adding to the financial burden on consumers already struggling with soaring inflation. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued an official notification approving an 8-paisa per unit increase in electricity rates for the month of August.
According to the notification, the tariff adjustment will also apply to K-Electric consumers, in line with existing government policy guidelines. The additional charges will be collected through electricity bills in October, impacting both residential and commercial users.
Fuel Cost Adjustment Behind the Increase
The decision follows a request by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), which sought a 19-paisa per unit increase under August’s fuel price adjustment. However, after reviewing the proposal, NEPRA approved a smaller increase to reflect actual fuel costs and ensure tariff stability.
Contrast With Earlier Tariff Reduction
Interestingly, in September, NEPRA had announced a reduction of Rs 1.78 per unit in electricity tariffs under the monthly fuel cost adjustment, offering temporary relief to consumers. The latest increase, however, reverses some of that benefit, reigniting public concern over rising utility expenses.
Public Reaction and Economic Impact
Consumers have expressed frustration over the continuous fluctuations in power tariffs, which they say make it difficult to manage household budgets. The adjustment comes at a time when fuel prices, food costs, and overall living expenses are already at record highs, intensifying the effects of inflation on lower- and middle-income households.
Analysts believe that while minor, this increase reflects ongoing challenges in Pakistan’s energy sector, particularly in managing fuel imports, generation costs, and circular debt.
