A sudden cloudburst has caused widespread destruction in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Neelum Valley.
The intense rainfall triggered severe flash flooding in the Katha Piran drain. Powerful floodwaters entered nearby residential and commercial areas within minutes.
Homes, shops, vehicles, bridges, crops, and electricity installations were damaged or completely destroyed. Several communities also lost access to nearby roads and essential services.
Authorities said no deaths had been reported during the initial assessment. However, the scale of material damage remains significant.
Rescue and relief teams are working in the affected locations. Officials are clearing debris and attempting to restore access to isolated communities.
Houses, Shops and Mosque Destroyed
Initial reports indicate that at least six houses were completely destroyed by the flash flood.
Sixteen shops were also swept away or badly damaged. The destruction has affected local traders and families who depended on these businesses for income.
A mosque was also destroyed as floodwaters moved through the area with considerable force.
Officials said dozens of other houses sustained varying levels of damage. Some structures were partially buried under mud, rocks, and debris.
Residents were forced to leave vulnerable buildings as water levels rose. Families are now assessing the loss of property, household belongings, and essential supplies.
The sudden flooding also destroyed crops and gardens. This has created additional financial pressure for farming families in the valley.
A large number of livestock were reportedly swept away. Livestock remains a major source of food and income for many local households.
Girls’ School and Local Infrastructure Badly Damaged
The Government Girls High School in Katha Piran sustained extensive damage during the flooding.
The school building was struck by water, mud, and debris. The damage has severely affected educational facilities available to girls in the area.
Local officials are expected to inspect the building before deciding whether classes can safely resume.
The disaster also caused major damage to transport and public infrastructure.
Floodwaters swept away one carry van, two jeeps, and eleven motorcycles. Several residents lost their main means of transport.
Six wooden bridges were also destroyed. These bridges connected small settlements and allowed residents to reach schools, markets, and healthcare facilities.
Their destruction has cut off movement between several local communities. Residents may now face longer and more dangerous travel routes.
Electrical installations were also damaged by the flood. Some affected areas could remain without electricity until repair teams gain safe access.
Communication and relief efforts are being complicated by damaged roads, blocked paths, and unstable ground.
Neelum Highway Disrupted as Rescue Operations Continue
Traffic on the Neelum Highway has been disrupted near Shahkot because of severe flooding.
The road blockage has further isolated affected communities. It has also slowed the movement of emergency teams and relief supplies.
Authorities are working to remove debris and reopen the highway. Heavy machinery may be required in locations covered by mud, rocks, and damaged material.
The Deputy Commissioner of Neelum Valley said the complete scale of destruction would be determined after rescue and relief operations were completed.
Assessment teams are expected to document damage to homes, businesses, public buildings, roads, bridges, crops, and electricity networks.
Officials have stressed that the current damage figures remain preliminary. The final numbers may increase as teams reach remote and cut-off locations.
Residents have been advised to stay away from flooded drains, damaged bridges, unstable slopes, and areas covered with debris.
Authorities have also urged people to follow official instructions and avoid unnecessary travel near affected sections of the highway.
Although no casualties have been reported so far, the incident highlights the growing danger of sudden and intense weather events in mountainous regions.
Neelum Valley remains particularly vulnerable because of its steep terrain, narrow waterways, and settlements located near streams and mountain slopes.
Rescue teams will continue clearing blocked routes, assisting affected families, and restoring access to isolated areas.
