KARACHI: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has arrested 273 people during a major raid on an illegal call centre operating along Shahrah-e-Faisal in Karachi over suspected involvement in international financial fraud.
The NCCIA carried out the operation on November 4 at a facility operating under the name Voxtron Solutions near Kavish Crown Plaza.
According to NCCIA Additional Director Shahzad Akbar, the suspects targeted foreign nationals by impersonating representatives of international banks and debt validation companies.
Investigators believe the employees used fraudulent telephone calls and caller ID spoofing techniques to obtain sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and credit card details.
The stolen information was used to facilitate unauthorised financial transactions through merchant accounts. The proceeds were transferred to Pakistan through company accounts and remittance channels.
During the raid, authorities seized 339 laptops, 152 mobile phones and four computer processing units. Investigators also recovered financial information belonging to thousands of foreign nationals.
Among those arrested are more than 100 women and 42 minors. A Karachi judicial magistrate granted bail to 98 women and juvenile suspects against surety bonds of Rs 5,000 each.
Meanwhile, nine key suspects, including individuals linked to the call centre’s ownership, were remanded into NCCIA custody for further investigation. Other male suspects were sent to prison on judicial remand.
The agency registered a case under several provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016.
Following the arrests, relatives of detained employees staged protests near Baloch Colony Bridge, disrupting traffic on Shahrah-e-Faisal. Some families maintained that their relatives are ordinary employees and had no involvement in fraudulent activities.
The investigation is continuing to establish the network’s domestic and international connections.
