Global internet watchdog NetBlocks has confirmed that WhatsApp has been disrupted in Pakistan.
“Confirmed: Live metrics show WhatsApp backends have been restricted in Pakistan, corroborating reports of media sharing issues. The measure comes as authorities tighten security ahead of protests planned by opposition party PTI, calling for the release of former PM Imran Khan,” NetBlocks stated.
A graphic shared by NetBlocks revealed that WhatsApp’s reachability was reduced to 0% for most internet service providers in the country.
However, NetBlocks also noted that the messaging app remained accessible via 50% of servers connected to Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL).
The disruptions occur as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) prepares for a protest in Islamabad, demanding the release of Imran Khan from prison.
Meanwhile, an interior ministry spokesperson announced that the suspension of Wi-Fi services would be implemented depending on the security situation, with restrictions only imposed in areas where security concerns are high.
“Mobile data and Wi-Fi services will be suspended only in areas with security concerns,” the spokesperson said. “Internet and mobile services will continue to operate as usual in the rest of the country.”
