LAHORE: The Water and Power Development Authority has awarded Rs1 million to Arshad Nadeem, the Olympic gold medalist in javelin throw, as announced.
Nadeem achieved a remarkable feat at the Paris Olympics by throwing 92.97 meters, setting a new Olympic Games record and securing first place, surpassing India’s Neeraj Chopra.
Nadeem, who is employed as an 18-grade sportsman at Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), has been recommended for promotion to the 19th grade. This recommendation is currently under review by the relevant committee at LESCO.
Arshad Nadeem joined LESCO in 2011 as an assistant linesman in Grade 7 and advanced to Grade 18, the highest grade achievable by a sportsman within the company. His performance has been notable, and his recent Olympic success has further elevated his status.
The recognition for Nadeem extends beyond WAPDA, as he has been celebrated across Pakistan.
Noteworthy figures such as the Punjab and Sindh chief ministers, the Sindh governor, and Maulana Tariq Jameel have offered congratulations and rewards.
Additionally, other prominent sports figures such as former cricketers Muhammad Irfan, Zulfiqar Babar, Zahid Khan, and hockey stars like Muhammad Yousaf, Sohail Abbas, and Waseem Ahmed have also been part of LESCO’s sports department in the past.
Nadeem’s victory has not only brought pride to Pakistan but has also highlighted the support and recognition athletes receive from their institutions and leaders.
