On Tuesday, in Karachi’s Orangi Town, unidentified gunmen opened fire on the vehicle of Dr. Samreen, the Vice-Chancellor of Dawood University of Engineering & Technology and spouse of PPP leader Dr. Asim Hussain.
According to a university spokesperson, Dr. Samreen is unharmed. DIG West Imran Balouch commented that the shooting might have been an attempted robbery. He emphasized that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions, and an investigation is currently underway.
In related news, the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) reported a staggering 44,000 criminal incidents in Karachi over the first seven months of 2024. This figure includes more than 31,000 cases of motorcycles being stolen or snatched, over 1,000 cars reported stolen or snatched, and more than 11,000 mobile phones being taken from citizens. The report indicates a peak in criminal activity in January with 7,815 incidents, while June saw a decline to 4,954 incidents, marking the lowest monthly count. The data shows a rise in crime rates during January, February, and March, followed by a decrease starting in April.
The situation highlights ongoing security challenges in Karachi, with the high volume of reported crimes reflecting the city’s struggle with rising theft and violent incidents. The authorities continue to investigate recent events and work towards improving safety and reducing crime rates.
