Uncertainty Surrounds National Assembly Convening Amid Political Transitions

Islamabad: The timing of the National Assembly’s convening remains uncertain as President Arif Alvi delays issuing orders despite receiving a summary from Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar. While Kakar has requested the assembly’s convening, the reasons behind the delay remain undisclosed, prompting speculation and concern, particularly amid crucial provincial leadership transitions in Punjab and Sindh.

As per constitutional provisions in Article 91 Clause 2, the National Assembly must convene within 21 days following general elections, as advised by the caretaker prime minister. The delay in calling the meeting of the newly elected 16th National Assembly raises questions about the decision-making process.

Constitutional experts emphasize that the failure to convene the National Assembly meeting will automatically trigger its summons on February 29, adding pressure to resolve the situation promptly.

Meanwhile, significant political developments unfold in Punjab, where the Speaker and Deputy Speaker have been elected, paving the way for the upcoming Chief Minister’s election. Similarly, the Sindh Assembly prepares for its session to elect its Chief Minister.

On the federal level, a coalition government comprising the PML-N, PPP, and MQM awaits leadership roles. Shehbaz Sharif of the PML-N is the anticipated prime ministerial candidate, with Asif Zardari of the PPP likely assuming the presidency. Additionally, the Senate chairman is expected to be from the PPP, while the Speaker of the National Assembly position will likely be filled by a member from the PML-N. These transitions mark a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s political landscape, highlighting the need for swift and transparent decision-making processes to ensure stability and continuity in governance.
