Sindh Assembly Passes Resolution Honoring Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as “National Democratic Hero”

Karachi: Sindh Assembly made a historic move on Thursday by unanimously passing a resolution to declare the late former Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) founder, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a “National Democratic Hero”. This decision follows a landmark opinion by the Supreme Court regarding Bhutto’s trial, sentence, and execution.

During the assembly session, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah presented the resolution, praising the Supreme Court’s opinion as a significant acknowledgment of the injustice done to Bhutto 45 years ago. The resolution highlighted the importance of upholding justice and ensuring fair trials for all individuals, regardless of their status.

Furthermore, the resolution honored the sacrifices of Begum Nusrat Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who dedicated their lives to seeking justice for Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s “cold-blooded judicial murder”. It called upon the Sindh government to petition the Centre to officially recognize Bhutto as a “National Democratic Hero” and declare him a martyr.

Additionally, the resolution urged the provincial government to award political workers and activists with the “Nishan-e-Zulfikar Ali Bhutto” for their contributions to democracy.

Chief Minister Shah emphasized the need for necessary legal amendments to prevent similar injustices in the future, echoing the sentiment of the resolution to honor Bhutto’s legacy.

Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs), including Muhammad Farooq from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and independent MPA Shabbir Qureshi, endorsed the resolution, highlighting the importance of fair trials and the significance of Bhutto’s contributions to Pakistani politics.

The unanimous approval of the resolution by the Sindh Assembly reflects a collective recognition of Bhutto’s role as a pivotal figure in Pakistan’s democratic history. The Supreme Court’s ruling, which acknowledged flaws in Bhutto’s trial, has been hailed as a positive and historic development by politicians and legal experts alike.
