PTA Provides New Clarification on X Services in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has informed the Sindh High Court (SHC) that services of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, have not been reinstated in Pakistan, according to ARY News.

PTA Director Law Ali Akbar clarified to the SHC that a statement made by the PTA’s counsel on September 12 about the withdrawal of the suspension notification was a result of a misunderstanding.

Ali Akbar further explained that a separate case, currently before the same bench, involves the withdrawal of a notification concerning the establishment of the Steering Committee.

The SHC has been asked to either withdraw or amend its previous written order regarding the matter.

Earlier on Friday, PTA’s lawyer Ahsan Imam had informed the court that the authority had withdrawn its notification concerning the suspension of X services. This response followed the SHC’s request for the PTA’s position on the ban. As a result, the court has postponed the hearing for two weeks.

The SHC had previously instructed the Ministry of Interior on April 17 to revoke its letter imposing the suspension on Twitter within a week. The ban on X was initially implemented in February following the general elections of 2024.
