The federal government has announced a new amendment to passport rules, allowing citizens to apply for their travel documents from any city across the country. This change aims to simplify the passport application process for citizens.
Under the new rules, passport fees can also be paid at any branch of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) nationwide. The Ministry of Interior has forwarded a summary of this amendment to the cabinet for approval. Once the cabinet approves the summary, the updated rules will be officially implemented.
On August 6, in response to growing complaints about delays in passport issuance, Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar assured the National Assembly that the issue would be resolved by the end of September. This resolution will involve the installation of new machinery and software.
The minister expressed confidence that the new system will address the delays and clear the existing backlog of applications. The new system is expected to significantly increase the daily passport issuance capacity from 26,000 to 60,000.
