ISLAMABAD: Qamar Zaman Kaira, a senior Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) senior leader, said that a politician should be chosen as the caretaker Prime Minister.
He mention that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has initiates discussions with allied parties regarding the selection of an interim government.
Qamar Zaman Kaira’s statement came in response to Prime Minister Shehbaz’s announcement that the government would hand over power to interim rulers prior to the completion of the National Assembly’s tenure.
The early dissolution of the assembly, which is set to conclude on August 12 at midnight, would allow the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) 90 days to schedule the elections. If the assembly completes its full tenure, the ECP is obligated to hold elections within 60 days.
Kaira, a senior leader of the PPP, emphasizes that political offices should be managed by politicians. Since it is their role and responsibility. He specifically highlighted the prime minister’s position as the country’s highest political office, stating that appointing judges, generals, bureaucrats, technocrats, journalists, or corporate sector employees to this role would be a discredit to the position and would not be effective.
He raise the question of his own eligibility to serve as a judge in a high court or the Supreme Court, highlighting the importance of expertise and experience specific to each position. Qamar Zaman Kaira said that political figures should be appointed as prime ministers, ministers, and chief ministers, as these roles require political acumen and understanding.
Regarding election reforms, Kaira mention that the process could be complete within a few days, but he also noted that the election commission had initiated the process based on outdated census data. He suggested that the commission would require four months for new delimitation. Kaira urges political parties to prioritize the legislation of election reforms soon after concluding the consultation process.
