LAHORE: The Punjab government issued orders to detain Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, former chief minister and current president of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) for a period of 30 days.
The decision was made based on a recommendation from the Lahore district intelligence committee. The order specifies that Elahi would be held in Lahore Camp Jail, where he was already being confined.
According to documents obtained by The News, the committee described Pervez Elahi as a prominent member of the PTI and a charismatic speaker. They express concerns about his potential to incite people and create a situation of lawlessness. The Model Town Superintendent of Police and the district intelligence committee also report that Elahi had the capability to cause mischief and disorder, raising genuine fears that his supporters could pose a threat to lives and property.
The authorities have recommended 30-day custody for Chaudhry Parvez Elahi. It is accompany by the registration of two FIRs (22/604 and 22/1822). That is at Qila Gujjar Singh Police Station, as well as another FIR (23/1150) at Ghalib Market Police Station. Investigations conducted under these FIRs have revealed Elahi’s alleges involvement in acts of arson, terrorism, and resistance against law enforcement agencies.
Despite being grant of bail on July 11 in the FIA money laundering case. Pervez Elahi remains in detention. He was initially arrested on June 1 in a corruption case. During a crackdown on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) following the May 9 protests. Subsequently, he was rearrested multiple times in various cases, including money laundering cases.
The deputy commissioner’s order allows Pervaiz Elahi to communicate with the Punjab government to address the decision.
