UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has voiced its concerns over what it perceives as the “generous” supply of conventional weapons to a specific South Asian state, widely understood to be India. Speaking at the UN Security Council, Ambassador Muhammad Usman Iqbal Jadoon, Pakistan’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, criticized the “policy of double standards” and narrow considerations fueling instability in the region.
He lamented the persistent increase in global military expenditures, particularly in South Asia, where one state’s military spending significantly surpasses others.
Ambassador Jadoon argued that the supply of conventional weaponry to this state, combined with its strategic capabilities, is exacerbating instability, hindering dispute resolution, and impeding peace and sustainable development. He warned that the conventional imbalance could lead to conflict between nuclear-armed states due to the inherent risk of escalation. Pakistan reiterated its commitment to a strategic restraint regime in South Asia and emphasized the need for dispute resolution in accordance with UN resolutions and a balance of conventional and strategic military forces.
The Pakistani envoy called for a stronger international commitment to support developing countries in combating the proliferation of illicit weapons. He expressed concern about a recent attack by the Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan terrorist group, highlighting the possession of modern and sophisticated arms and calling for an investigation into their acquisition.
Ambassador Jadoon urged the expansion of arms control to cover conventional weapons, emphasizing the dangerous imbalances created by the accumulation of conventional capabilities in cyber and outer space. The UN’s High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, highlighted the threats posed by small arms, noting their role in conflicts, terrorism, and organized crime, leading to human rights violations and gender-based violence.
In 2021, small arms were responsible for 45% of all violent deaths, totaling 260,000 fatalities, prompting a call for enhanced measures to prevent the illicit trade and misuse of such weapons.
