LAHORE: A District and Sessions Court in Lahore granted the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) a one-day transit remand for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president and former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi in an asset reference case.
Chaudhry Parvez Elahi had recently been released from Adiala Jail. However, he was quickly rearrested by NAB Lahore in connection with assets beyond known sources of income case.
Initially, NAB presented Elahi before the Court seeking a two-day remand for further investigation in the asset reference case. However, Duty Judge Khalid Hayat rejected the request and granted a one-day transit remand instead.
NAB’s investigation is related to a significant number of contracts, totaling 226 and valued at around 23 billion Pakistani rupees, allegedly involving corruption and kickbacks. Chaudhry Parvez Elahi is accused of being involved in a corruption network through his associates in these contracts. NAB claims that these contracts were manipulated to favor specific contractors. This has raised concerns about the transparency of development projects in Lahore.
The investigation has led to several high-profile arrests, including Secretary Sohail Asghar, based on substantial evidence. NAB Lahore conducted numerous raids and apprehended several individuals believed to be connected to the corruption scandal.
Allegedly, Chaudhry Parvez Elahi’s involvement escalated when the Chief Minister’s Office issued directives to expedite the approval of 184 summaries related to these contentious contracts.
