MP Makes History by Lighting Cigarette During Session in Pakistan’s Parliament

Cigarette

In an unprecedented incident, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq expressed regret on Friday as a National Assembly member was observed smoking a cigarette on the house floor, marking the first occurrence of such an event in the history of Pakistan.

The Speaker underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that even consuming water requires prior permission in the assembly.

During an NA session, Speaker Sadiq not only addressed the smoking incident but also took notice of the increasing use of social media within the parliamentary space.

Specifically, he mentioned the prohibition of Tiktokers making videos from the gallery, emphasizing the need for adherence to decorum.

While the assembly has not taken formal objection to this practice yet, Speaker Sadiq cautioned that if such actions persist, appropriate measures will be implemented.

The speaker’s concern reflects the evolving dynamics of technology’s role within legislative spaces and the imperative to maintain a focused and disciplined environment during official proceedings.

Speaker Sadiq also emphasized the exclusive access of members of the National Assembly to the lobbies, categorically stating that irrelevant individuals should refrain from entering these areas.

The restriction on lobby access is a measure aimed at preserving the sanctity and confidentiality of parliamentary proceedings.

This episode in the National Assembly raises questions about the adherence to parliamentary norms and decorum, prompting a potential reevaluation of rules and regulations to ensure the dignity and seriousness of legislative sessions are maintained.

The speaker’s remarks serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding established protocols within the parliamentary framework.
