A female constable has been suspended from her duties after a TikTok video of her in police uniform went viral on social media, as reported on Tuesday.
Constable Maria Gill, who is stationed at the Gizri police station in Karachi, was the focus of attention after a video of her in uniform became widely shared online. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South, Syed Asad Raza, responded swiftly to the situation, leading to her suspension.
DIG South emphasized that the police force operates as a professional institution and cannot tolerate such “irresponsible” behavior from its members.
In response to her suspension, Maria Gill has called on the authorities to reconsider their decision and ensure that justice is served. She has argued that the disciplinary action against her is unjust and has requested a review of the case.
This incident comes in the wake of increased scrutiny over police officers’ use of social media.
Earlier this year, in June, the then Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Karachi had expressed concerns about the rising trend of TikTok videos being made by police personnel, including female constables.
The former Karachi police chief, Imran Yaqoob Minhas, had sternly criticized the practice, stating that police uniforms are intended solely for official duties and not for personal publicity.
He emphasized that creating TikTok videos while in uniform during duty hours is wholly inappropriate.
The case highlights ongoing issues within the police force regarding the use of social media by its members and the need for maintaining professional standards.
The suspension of Constable Gill serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to the guidelines and regulations set forth by the police department.
