Ishaq Dar
Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is set to embark on his first high-level ministerial visit to Bangladesh, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
The visit, scheduled from April 22 to April 24, will include discussions with Bangladesh’s Foreign Adviser, Towheed Hossain, along with meetings with the country’s leadership. This trip is expected to strengthen bilateral ties, with several agreements likely to be signed.
One of the key areas of cooperation to be addressed during the visit is the fight against transnational crimes such as drug trafficking and human smuggling. Both nations have expressed interest in establishing a formal pact to enhance security collaboration and tackle these pressing issues.
The meetings will also focus on boosting economic and trade partnerships, reflecting a renewed commitment to fostering closer ties after decades of strained relations.
A notable milestone in Pakistan-Bangladesh trade relations occurred in February 2025 when Bangladesh initiated direct trade with Pakistan for the first time since gaining independence in 1971.
This breakthrough was marked by the shipment of 50,000 tons of rice from Bangladesh via Port Qasim in Karachi. The resumption of trade between the two countries signals a shift towards economic cooperation, driven by recent political changes in Bangladesh.
The improved diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh can be attributed to the formation of Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
His leadership has played a crucial role in reshaping Bangladesh’s foreign policy, fostering stronger regional ties, and facilitating economic engagement with neighboring countries.
The transition followed widespread protests against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which ultimately led to the collapse of her government. The political shift has created new opportunities for Bangladesh and Pakistan to overcome past tensions and collaborate on mutual interests.
Ishaq Dar’s visit is expected to further consolidate these positive developments, paving the way for greater economic integration and diplomatic understanding between the two South Asian nations.
With both countries looking to capitalize on this renewed partnership, the visit holds the potential to unlock new avenues for trade, security cooperation, and diplomatic engagement, setting a new course for Pakistan-Bangladesh relations in the years to come.
