Heavy Rain
ISLAMABAD: The federal government forewarned the people about nationwide heavy rains, urging people to exercise caution to avoid mishaps.
Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman urged all public and non-government organizations to remain “vigilant and ready” as heavy rains with thunderstorms are expected over the next 24 to 48 hours.
She said that the rains may impact at least 0.9 million people.
“The highest amount of rainfall will be in Punjab’s cities like Lahore, Narowal, and Sialkot. Other provinces have been alerted too for heavy to moderate rain,” Senator Sherry Rehman warned.
Urban flooding alerts had been issued for cities and municipal areas with risks of landslides.
High flood in Chenab and low flood in Ravi
On Friday, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a high-level flood warning due to the possibility of water release from India. The warning specifically focuses on the Chenab River and Ravi River.
Currently, all other major rivers in the region are flowing within their normal ranges. Meanwhile, flash flooding is anticipated in the Hill Torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan division and local Nullahs of North Balochistan over the next 48 hours.
Chenab River is in high flood today. PDMA forewarned of a high flood in the river.
The PDMA has emphasized the likelihood of high to very high-level flooding in the River Chenab and associated Nullahs of Rivers Ravi and Chenab from July 8 to July 9.
Furthermore, the upper air cyclonic circulation observed over West Bengal in India has now moved westwards and is situated over the central parts of Madhya Pradesh.
To address the potential flood risk, district administrations from Sialkot to Jhang have been placed on high alert. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and implementing necessary measures to minimize the potential impact of the expected floods.
