Special Remission
ISLAMABAD: In a significant humanitarian move, the Federal Government, under the approval of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has announced special remission for women and child prisoners.
This compassionate initiative is aimed at mitigating the sentences of individuals sentenced for two years or less, as well as those with less than two years left to complete their terms.
The remission, however, comes with specific exclusions. Individuals convicted of heinous crimes such as murder, espionage, and anti-state activities will not benefit from this reduction. The list of ineligible categories also includes those convicted of adultery, theft, dacoity, kidnapping, terrorism, narcotics offenses, and foreign nationals.
This gesture echoes the government’s commitment to humane treatment and rehabilitation, ensuring that vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, receive equitable consideration in the justice system.
This announcement follows a precedent set last year during Eid-e-Milad-Un-Nabi (S.A.W), where President Arif Alvi approved a 90-day remission for prisoners under Article 45 of the constitution.
The remission was granted to convicted prisoners in various prisons across the country, excluding those charged with serious offenses like murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state activities, terrorist activities, rape, kidnapping/abduction, robbery, dacoity, and those sentenced under the Foreigners Act 1946.
The criteria for eligibility included male prisoners above 65 years of age who had served at least one-third of their jail term.
Similarly, women prisoners above 60 years of age, having completed one-third of their sentence, were considered for this remission.
These compassionate measures reflect the government’s dedication to justice reform, emphasizing rehabilitation and humane treatment for prisoners, particularly the most vulnerable segments of society.
