KARACHI: A major fire erupted at a plastic factory in Karachi’s SITE area on Friday morning, but was brought under control after an intense hour-long firefighting effort, according to rescuers.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported. However, a fireman from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Amir Yusuf, lost consciousness during the operation and was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
The SITE-A police department reported that the fire started in a plastic factory near Customs House. Rescue-1122 Director General Dr. Abid Shaikh stated that the fire was first reported at around 9 a.m. Seven fire tenders were deployed, and the blaze was controlled by approximately 2:15 p.m.
Rescue-1122 official Hassaan Khan noted that the fire had destroyed around 70% of the factory’s material.
While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, initial information from the factory administration suggests that a high-tension wire passing over the factory broke and fell onto a gunny bag inside the facility.
This incident is believed to have ignited the fire, which then spread rapidly due to the presence of flammable materials within the factory.
Rescue officials are still working to determine the precise cause of the fire, but the factory’s combustible contents significantly contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze.
