ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, the interim cabinet in Pakistan approved the country’s inaugural “National Space Policy,” permitting international companies to offer communication and coordination services to consumers.
Dr. Umar Saif, the Minister of Information Technology, explained in a press conference that the approved policy sets the groundwork for utilizing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Communication Satellites.
Dr. Umar Saif emphasized that this marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s space program, allowing private companies to provide services to consumers. This development is crucial for enhancing communication capabilities through advanced satellite technology.
The National Space Policy’s approval is anticipated to improve telecommunications services, promoting advancements in connectivity and information dissemination throughout the country. The minister highlighted that the policy underwent a three-month consultation process with stakeholders to ensure a balanced approach to facilitating private companies.
Furthermore, the approved policy aims to establish a Space Regulatory regime in Pakistan following international standards. Funds have also been allocated for research and development in the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).
In addition to the National Space Policy, the federal cabinet also greenlit the creation of the National Cybercrime Investigation Authority (NCIA). This dedicated agency will take over the responsibilities of investigating cybercrime from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), with a gradual transition planned.
The minister informed that the cabinet’s approval includes the establishment of a Telecom Tribunal to handle cases and disputes related to the telecom sector. The tribunal will consist of specialized individuals with knowledge of information, telecom, and policy.
Responding to queries, the minister mentioned that the federal government recently notified the right-of-way policy, which has been adopted by all provinces. Regarding the removal of the Managing Director of the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC), he clarified that it was due to serious complaints, including financial irregularities and misuse of powers. The senior-most person has assumed charge following a three-month investigation.
